I really enjoy doing the background research. I love learning new things, so getting my hands on an interview to transcribe, or looking at a new disease detection method really makes my day. The fact that I can take my dog into work is a huge bonus!

Editorial Assistant, 5m Publishing, Benchmark Knowledge Services.

How long have you been with Benchmark?

Since January 2019.

Where were you before and why did you join Benchmark?

I’m originally from Canada, but I’ve moved around a fair bit between Canada and the US as the years have gone by. I wound up in Ireland, largely by accident, when I was 20 and decided to finish university there.

I always enjoyed learning and studying. I found that I had too many interests to just settle into one lane of education! Because of that, I decided to focus more on the general research side of academia in the social sciences. I completed a MSc in Applied Social Research from Trinity College in Dublin, since it focused on the methodologies behind research and could be applied to multiple fields.

When my husband and I decided to move to the UK, I was excited to put the research skills to use! Benchmark seemed like a great chance for me to learn something new and work with a company that had a positive vision.

Can you describe your role?

I’m based at the Cornbury Park office in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, and I work with the 5m Publishing team, part of Benchmark Knowledge Services. I work with the editors of The Fish Site, The Poultry Site, The Pig Site, and Veterinary Practice to post news, research articles, and help with some of the back-of-house tasks. It’s a varied role and gives me plenty of opportunities to learn about what’s happening in the field – or barn, actually.

What’s your favourite part of the role?

I really enjoy doing the background research. I love learning new things, so getting my hands on an interview to transcribe, or looking at a new disease detection method really makes my day. The fact that I can take my dog into work with me is also a huge bonus!

What’s your biggest challenge?

So far, my biggest challenge has been transitioning from academic writing to journalistic writing. I keep forgetting that people don’t want to read articles where the paragraphs begin with, ‘Furthermore…’
