Senior People Manager, Benchmark, UK

Rob Squirrell is Senior People Manager for Benchmark based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

1. How long have you been with Benchmark?

Since September 2014, so just over 3 years.

2. What does a typical day look like?

It’s a cliché to say that every day is different but it’s a cliché for a reason! My day can cover a wide variety of activities but they all have one thing in common – the people who work for Benchmark. A lot of my time is spent supporting managers, particularly in the Animal Health and Genetics divisions, across a range of different activities; for example, recruiting new people, looking at how we structure and organise our teams or reviewing our policies and procedures. I am also involved in broader strategic activities.

3. Where are you based?

Bush House in Edinburgh but I am regularly found at our other UK sites, and occasionally further afield!

4. Who do you work with?

My immediate team is obviously the People team but the list of others that I work with regularly is long and varied.

5. Best bit about your job?

The opportunity to be part of an organisation that has ambition and gives people the chance to have a real impact on our success is really important to me. On a more day to day basis I love the variety, the challenges and the autonomy that I have in my role. I also love to travel and have been lucky enough to visit many of the fantastic places where Benchmark has a presence.

6. Biggest challenge?

The speed at which we move often throws up a lot of challenge. Sometimes frustrating, generally motivating, but never boring.

7. What has been your most memorable event while working at Benchmark?

There have been many and most of them positive, but finding myself in a ‘white out’ blizzard while trying to get to our site in Ardtoe, Scotland and unable to see anything except the brake lights of the car in front was certainly memorable but not in a good way!

8. Sum up your job in three words

Never, ever dull.

9. If you could swap roles with anyone at Benchmark whom would it be and why…?

Anyone who can speak more than two languages. We have so many people that work across boundaries and in multiple languages – it never fails to impress me.
