Job Purpose

This position will assist in the running of research projects associated with the Company’s R&D pipeline, and will include oversight of the laboratory, in addition to assisting with research project planning, sample processing/archiving and SOP optimisation.

The position will also support clinical work associated with the Company’s activities to develop veterinary health products by assisting in 1) the planning and running of clinical trials, 2) SOP optimisation, 3) handling, processing and archiving of clinical trials samples, and 4) data analysis and report writing. The Laboratory Technician will work closely with the Senior Research Scientist and Research Scientist within a dynamic team to fulfill clinical trial and research project objectives for the development and Market Approval of veterinary health products. The Laboratory Technician will primarily be based in the Company’s research laboratory in Edinburgh but will also be required to travel/work remotely at one or more of the Company’s other facilities.

Key Responsibilities

The Laboratory Technician role will be split, with 60% of the time spent in the provision of support for ongoing and new clinical trials, and 40% of the time spent contributing to laboratory research activities.

The Laboratory Technician will:

  • Work closely with the Senior Research Scientist, Research Scientist and clinical trial facility personnel to establish procedures and protocols to support the implementation and ongoing development of outlined internal research projects and clinical trials.
  • Aid with the design and implementation of clinical trials and plans.
  • Be responsible for handling, processing and archiving clinical trial samples, for example, blood serum for ELISA and tissue sampling for QRT-PCR or QPCR.
  • Be responsible for data collection and recording, and sorting and summarizing of data from clinical trials/experiments, ensuring accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Handle confidential information and results in an appropriate manner.
  • Assist in the completion of the clinical trial/research project reports and updates.
  • Help with the implementation of Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards in the laboratory, ensuring that equipment meets minimum requirements, documenting procedures and determining what actions must be taken.
  • Be responsible for the oversight and maintenance of equipment in the laboratory.
  • Order laboratory supplies and equipment as required, as well as maintain and document laboratory stocks.
  • Coordinate safety training and maintenance of Health and Safety documentation.
  • Be able to travel/work away from home essential.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological science essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of qPCR and/or ELISA preferable.
  • Knowledge and experience of microbiological techniques.
  • Experience with clinical trials preferable but not essential.
  • Experience of working to GLP and/or GCP preferable but not essential.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling hazardous and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge and experience of basic statistical data analysis.
