Oscar Hennig appointed Operations Director for Benchmark’s shrimp breeding program

Oscar Hennig joined Benchmark’s Breeding & Genetics division in November to head up the operational and commercial management of our shrimp breeding program.

Oscar has over 25 years’ experience of working within the shrimp farming industry. Before joining Benchmark, he managed the breeding programmes of major broodstock companies throughout Hawaii.

Originally from Brazil, Oscar holds a B.Sc. degree in Oceanography and a M.Sc. in Aquaculture. He has a significant record of international publications, presentations and workshops related to research on disease management, farming technology, breeding and genetics of nine different species of marine shrimp. He is also one of the researchers in SFP stock development, which has become the current standard within the L. vannamei shrimp broodstock market.

Oscar brings new experience and commercial networks to Benchmark’s ambitious shrimp programme.

According to FAO, the demand for shrimp is expected to grow between 5 and 10-fold by 2050. The current shrimp broodstock market is estimated to approximately USD 300m and is expected to grow to USD 1.5-3Bn by 2050. Based upon the former Ceniacua shrimp programme in Colombia,

Benchmark intends to expand its breeding business to serve all of the major shrimp producing markets with genetically advanced products. Having Oscar on board, brings this vision within reach.
