Giulia – R&D Trial Manager, Italy

R&D Trial Manager in Italy, Giulia Franchi, discusses her experience of working as a woman in the Aquaculture industry.

Why do you think it is important for women to work in STEM careers?

Giving women equal opportunities to pursue and thrive in STEM careers helps narrow the gender pay gap, enhances women’s economic security, and ensures a diverse and talented STEM workforce.

Can you name a woman in the scientific sphere who inspires you?

My first inspiration till the university period was Samantha Cristoforetti the Italian astronaut and engineer with her life always find the time to highlight STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) especially among women. Her success in that difficult job was an inspiration for my scientific attitude also if in another sphere: the marine biology. In that field I found another important woman that was an inspiration. Tania DE Wolf my advisor, mentor who is driving and encouraging me in my professional growth in the aquaculture research field.

What do you love most about your job?

Working in research is dynamic…always new and in development, I’m constantly looking for an explanation of my observations. The problem solving is exciting, increasing knowledge keep young and satisfied also if the results are not fast coming the time spent is never heavy. Doing my job the time run I never feel bored.

How have you experienced being a woman in the science sector?

Luckily from my experience in science sector I never felt uncomfortable. At IARC, my most important job experience, we are more women than men, so it is easy not feel ‘diversity smell’. We help each other as a team and everyone understand the needs as mother, wife, and worker so I’m feeling close to them also during hard periods.
