Meghan – Technical Environmental Specialist, UK

Technical Environmental Specialist in the UK for Benchmark Animal Health, Meghan Rochford, discusses her experience of working as a woman in the Aquaculture industry.

Why do you think it is important for women to work in STEM careers?

I think its important to have diversity in STEM not only including women but all genders. Every person brings a new perspective and outlook which is so important to advancing STEM subjects.

Can you name a woman in the scientific sphere who inspires you?

I don’t have any specific women, but I think its important for young girls and women to see themselves represented in all industries, not just STEM. I was limited in what subjects I could take in school, which I don’t want to see for other girls. The more women are seen in STEM whether that’s online, in schools, or on TV, the better.

What do you love most about your job?

I love that I get to continue to learn in an ever-changing environment. The sciences are constantly progressing and being part of that is interesting. I also love how we’re innovative in Benchmark and I love being a part of that wider global community.

How have you experienced being a woman in the science sector?

I think there have been positives and negatives working as a woman in science. For the most part I’ve been treated like anyone else, and my experiences and knowledge has grown and been appreciated. I have worked in some companies where sexism is apparent. The aquaculture industry in Scotland is historically male dominated and this can be intimidating. However, I’ve had some great managers and leaders that have helped me grow and learn.
